Alveolar Bone

The alveolar bone, also known as the alveolar process, is a thick ridge of bone that surrounds teeth and forms tooth sockets in the jaw bones, the maxilla, and the mandible. The alveolar bone’s functions include:

  • Supporting teeth
  • Absorbing and distributing forces from oral functions
  • Connecting to the tooth root via the periodontal ligament, which receives the force of biting
